“The Nature of Race in Faulkner’s South” - Dr. Glenn Arbery

On February 27, 2026, Dr. Glenn Arbery concluded our Valor Institute retreat on William Faulkner’s Absalom,Absalom! with an honest examination of racial prejudice as depicted in Faulkner’s fiction as well as the wider American literary tradition. Looking back as far as William Shakespeare’s Othello, Dr. Arbery explored how racial distinction has been made to turn persons into “others” cut off from our own humanity.

If you’d like to attend an academic retreat with the Valor Institute, please see our calendar of events.

The Valor Institute for Studies in Person and Community exists to promote an adequate philosophical anthropology and capacious understanding of the human person flourishing in authentic community.
